The Ultimate Checklist for Starting University

So it’s come the time for you to fly the nest and head onto your next adventure. In the next few weeks leading up to this departure, you’ll probably be running around like a headless chicken trying to pack everything you need. No need to worry though we’ve got your back, with our ultimate, downloadable checklist you won’t forget a thing! To make this even easier for you we’ve broken down the checklist into categories. So now you can work through a category one at a time, told you we’ve got our back!


Kitchen



  • Tea towel

  • Kitchen Knife and set of cutlery

  • Bottle opener/corkscrew (essential!)

  • Tin opener

  • Scissors

  • 2x Mugs

  • Plate and Bowl

  • 2x Glasses (potentially plastic ones)

  • Fairy Liquid, surface cleaner/wipes and Scrubber (rubber gloves for those of you with sensitive skin)

  • Bin liners, cling film, foil

  • Lunch box/ Tupperware containers

  • Cooking:

  • Chopping board

  • Wooden spoon

  • Oven cloves

  • Baking trays

  • Sieve

  • Frying pan and sauce pan

  • Measuring jug

  • You may need to buy a kettle/toaster/microwave when you get there

Bedroom



  • Bedding

  • Mattress protector

  • 2x sheets

  • Duvet + 2x Duvet covers

  • Pillows + 2x pillow cases

  • Mattress topper (you’ll probably need this if you want a good night’s sleep)

  • Clothes hangers

  • Non-essential (if you want the room to feel a bit homelier):

  • Two decorative cushions

  • Blanket (dresses the bed and keeps you extra warm, comes in handier than you think)

  • Fairy lights/lamp

Bathroom



  • Toothbrush

  • Products

  • Shampoo, Conditioner, hand soap, toothpaste, shower gel, moisturiser, makeup wipes/remover, deodorant, air freshener, hairspray

  • Makeup

  • Hairbrush/ comb

  • Sanitary items

  • Razor

  • 2x towels

  • 2x flannels

  • Bath mat

  • Laundry Basket

  • Toilet Roll

  • Med Kit:

  • Pain killers – paracetamol, ibuprofen (something to combat fresher’s flu)

  • Prescription medication

  • Blister plasters

  • Plasters

  • Antiseptic

  • Contraception


Electricals




  • Laptop/tablet

  • Hair Dryer/straighteners/curlers

  • Chargers

  • HDMI cable

  • Headphones

  • Non-essential:

  • Printer (you’ll be given a printing credit, I never used all of mine)

  • TV (some accommodation provide one)


Clothes


  • Dressing gown (always useful) and slippers

  • PJ’s

  • Everyday clothes

  • Smart clothes (you’ll probably end up going to a formal at some point)

  • Sport clothes

  • Coat (one summer and one winter)

  • Underwear (hopefully we shouldn’t have to remind you)

  • Big bag (something that will fit a laptop and books)

  • Gloves, hat and scarf (it can get pretty cold here in Newcastle)

  • Shoes:

  • Flip-flops, Trainers (always a good shout for a night out), Heels (probably just one pair)


Stationary Stuff



  • Stationary:

  • Highlighters, black pens, coloured pens, post it notes, calculator, scissors, USB stick

  • Folders and plastic wallets

  • Textbooks

  • Notebooks/pads of paper, diary


Important Documents


  • Passport/ID

  • Uni acceptance letter

  • National insurance, NHS medical number

  • Student finance documents

  • Bank details

  • Insurance documents

  • TV License

  • Rail card

  • Fresher’s Wristband

  • Game Console

  • Boxsets/DVD

  • Pack of cards

  • Speakers

  • Fancy dress – even if it’s just a pair of ears (if you join a society you’ll more than likely go on a fancy dress night out)
